A kind of quarter-turn valve called a butterfly valve is used in pipelines to control or stop the flow of gases and liquids. Their circular disc that pivots to open or close the valve gives them their name, which is derived from their similarity to a butterfly's wings. Because of its tiny and lightweight construction, a butterfly valve can be used in a variety of applications. A butterfly valve's body, disc (or vane), stem, and actuator are its fundamental parts. Usually constructed from plastic, stainless steel, or cast iron, the body holds the disc. The disk is positioned in the middle of the pipe and fastened on a stem. The disk is perpendicular to the flow when the valve is closed, preventing it. The disk rotates parallel to the flow when the valve is open, reducing resistance and enabling the flow to pass through.
The adaptability and simplicity of use of butterfly valves are two of their main benefits. They can be turned on and off manually with a handwheel or lever or automatically with an electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuator.
