The 300 series stainless steel is noted for its remarkable resistance to oxidation and corrosion at high temperatures. The stainless steel 321 and 321H are two variations of this series. These alloys are especially useful in applications where harsh conditions and high temperatures are present. An austenitic stainless steel alloy incorporating titanium is called 321 stainless steel. By stabilizing the alloy and preventing chromium carbide precipitation, the titanium addition ensures improved performance in high-temperature conditions.
A high-carbon version of 321 with enhanced strength and creep resistance at high temperatures is called 321H. Because of the increased carbon content, it has improved mechanical qualities while maintaining the same level of titanium stability as 321. Because 321H has more carbon in it, it has better tensile strength and creep resistance, which makes it appropriate for more demanding applications with greater temperatures and mechanical stresses. Up to about 1000°C (1830°F), it retains good resistance to oxidation and corrosion.
