Because of its normal composition of 25% chromium and 20% nickel, it can withstand temperatures of up to 1,100°C (2,012°F) without losing structural integrity. A low-carbon form of 310, stainless steel 310S, has better weldability and is less prone to sensitization, while yet offering comparable heat resistance. Its typical composition is 20% nickel and 25% chromium, with a lower than average carbon content (usually less than 0.08%). Its resistance to carbide precipitation during welding is improved by this feature, which is useful in applications involving high heat and frequent thermal cycling.
