Stainless steel Specialized wire mesh known as 317L wire mesh is composed of 317L stainless steel, a low-carbon variation of 317 grade stainless steel. This substance is renowned for having an exceptional ability to withstand corrosion, particularly in situations where there is strong acidity or chloride present. The material is less prone to have intergranular corrosion, a common problem in stainless steels subjected to high temperatures, because 317L is a "low carbon" substance. A typical composition of 317L stainless steel has 18–20% chromium, 11–15% nickel, and an extra 3-4% molybdenum. This formulation is perfect for use in tough environments like chemical processing, marine applications, and pollution control systems since it imparts good resistance to a range of corrosive substances, including sulfuric acid and chlorides.

Depending on the needs of the application, the mesh is woven or welded into a variety of configurations, including as plain weave, twill weave, and Dutch weave.
