These grades are part of the family of stainless steels known as duplex, which combines the qualities of ferritic and austenitic steels to produce a material that is more resilient to stress corrosion cracking than regular stainless steels. UNS S31803, commonly referred to as S31803, is a popular duplex stainless steel that provides a well-balanced combination of strong strength and good corrosion resistance. It is very resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and general corrosion in severe environments like seawater or acidic conditions since it includes about 22% chromium, 5% nickel, and 3% molybdenum. Applications for this grade are frequently found in oil and gas, maritime, and chemical processing.
An upgraded form of S31803, S32205, also known as UNS S32205, provides even more strength and higher corrosion resistance. This grade contains 4.5% nickel in addition to slightly greater amounts of molybdenum (about 3%), chromium (about 22%), and both. These improvements enable it to be used in more harsh conditions and offer improved protection against stress corrosion cracking caused by chloride. Pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and other crucial parts in industries requiring greater strength and corrosion resistance frequently use S32205.
