Round bars of stainless steel 321 and 321H are special alloys with outstanding oxidation and corrosion resistance that are intended for use in high-temperature environments. These grades are austenitic stainless steels that are stabilized by the addition of titanium. They are mostly made of chromium and nickel. Stainless steel 321 is renowned for having strong mechanical characteristics and being resistant to oxidation and scale in hot conditions. It is capable of withstanding temperatures as high as about 900°C (1650°F). Titanium is added to assist stop chromium carbides from forming, which could reduce the steel's ability to withstand corrosion. Because of this, 321 is a good option for heat exchangers, chemical processing, and airplane construction.
A high-carbon version of stainless steel 321 is called 321H, and it is intended to increase creep resistance and strength at high temperatures. Up to about 1000°C (1830°F), it is especially good at retaining its mechanical qualities. Pressure vessels, petrochemical plants, power plants, and other situations with high temperatures and stress are good candidates for using 321H because of its greater carbon content, which also boosts tensile strength and hardness.
