By stabilizing the structure, the titanium addition lowers the possibility of sensitization, a condition in which chromium carbides accumulate at grain boundaries and increase the metal's susceptibility to corrosion.
A high-carbon variation of 321 that offers enhanced strength and hardness at high temperatures is stainless steel 321H. This qualifies 321H for high-stress applications, especially in the power generating and petrochemical sectors where parts are subjected to extreme heat and harsh conditions.
