A variation of the 304 grade known as stainless steel 304L pipes is identified by its reduced carbon content, which is usually 0.03% or less. This alteration has a number of advantages, especially for applications that call for improved resistance to sensitization during welding processes and weldability. Like the regular 304 grade, 304L stainless steel has a composition of roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel. 304L's lower carbon content, however, reduces the possibility of carbide precipitation during welding, which in some high-temperature applications can result in decreased corrosion resistance and structural integrity. As a result, 304L is particularly beneficial in settings where welding is frequent and strong corrosion resistance is required.
