Austenitic stainless steel pipes, or 321 pipes, are a type of pipe that is frequently utilized in high-temperature applications. Their main alloying material is titanium, which improves their resistance to intergranular corrosion and allows them to be used in conditions where precipitation of chromium carbide can happen. Applications involving temperatures between 1000°F and 1500°F (540°C and 815°C), such as those in the aerospace, chemical processing, and power generating industries, benefit greatly from this special characteristic. About 17–19% of 321 stainless steel's chemical makeup is made up of chromium, 9–12% of nickel, and 5-7% of titanium. The remaining portion is iron. In welding and high-temperature service, the inclusion of titanium stabilizes the steel against carbide precipitation, preventing any corrosion that could weaken the material.
