Because of their superior mechanical qualities and resistance to corrosion, stainless steel 316 and 316L are high-performance alloys that are extensively employed in a variety of industrial applications. These stainless steel grades are especially well-suited for settings with a lot of abrasive materials and extreme temperatures. Stainless Steel 316 is a type of stainless steel that contains chromium, nickel, and molybdenum. It is distinguished from other stainless steel grades by its exceptional resistance to corrosion caused by chlorides. It is therefore perfect for chemical industrial and maritime situations. The composition of 16–18% chromium, 10–14% nickel, and 2-3% molybdenum improves its resistance to oxidation and corrosion.
A low-carbon version of 316 stainless steel that offers even greater corrosion resistance is called 316L stainless steel. Because 316L has less carbon, there is less chance of carbide precipitation during welding, which makes it a great material for welded constructions. It is especially useful in applications where excellent corrosion resistance and strength retention at high temperatures are required. While 316L's maximum carbon concentration is 0.03% as opposed to 0.08% for 316, its chemical makeup is otherwise identical to that of 316.
