These tubes are made of iron, nickel (about 11–15%), chromium (approximately 18–20%), and a sizable quantity of molybdenum (3–4%). They are intended to survive hostile environments more effectively than typical stainless steels, like 304 or 316 grades. Because molybdenum is added to 317 stainless steel, it becomes more resistant to corrosion caused by chlorides, which makes it especially ideal for situations with seawater or other corrosive substances. Because of this, 317 tubes are perfect for usage in high-temperature, chemical, and marine applications where resistance to pitting and oxidation is essential. In addition, they retain their structural integrity at temperatures greater than many other grades of stainless steel—up to 1700°F (927°C).
Stainless steel 317 tubes have strong tensile strength and endurance in terms of mechanical characteristics. They can be welded using the same methods as stainless steel, and they can be cold worked to strengthen and harden them.
