The 300 series stainless steels' high-performance alloys, stainless steel 321 and 321H, are made especially to function in hot conditions. These are variants of stainless steel Type 321 that have titanium stabilized to keep carbide precipitation from occurring during welding or exposure to high temperatures. They are especially useful in applications where high temperatures and corrosive conditions are an issue because of this feature. Austenitic in nature, stainless steel 321 provides outstanding protection against oxidation and corrosion at high temperatures. Intergranular corrosion, which happens when chromium carbides precipitate at grain boundaries and reduce chromium concentration, is more resistant to it when stabilized with titanium. Applications for this alloy include heat exchangers, petrochemical industries, and aviation exhaust stacks.
A high-carbon version of 321 stainless steel, 321H enhances creep resistance and strength at high temperatures. For more demanding applications requiring better mechanical qualities, 321H is therefore especially well-suited. It's widely utilized in equipment for chemical processing, power plants, and furnace parts, among other applications.
