Niobium stabilizes this austenitic stainless steel, improving its resistance to intergranular corrosion and making it perfect for high-temperature applications. Niobium is added to Stainless Steel 347 to help it retain its strength and durability at high temperatures. As a result, it is frequently used for exhaust systems, heat exchangers, and other parts that are subjected to severe environments. Niobium (up to 1%), nickel (9–12%), and chromium (17–19%) are the elements that make up Stainless Steel 347. Excellent resistance to oxidation and carburization is ensured by this combination. The resilience of the steel is especially useful in settings that experience thermal cycling or sporadic exposure to high temperatures.
Regarding its mechanical characteristics, Stainless Steel 347 demonstrates a moderate degree of hardness, good ductility, and high tensile strength. Its ability to tolerate temperatures up to roughly 900°C (1650°F) without losing structural integrity makes it indispensable for use in applications like heat-treating apparatus, furnace parts, and chemical processing apparatus.
